Surfing in Sri Lanka: A Tropical Paradise for Wave Riders
SRI LANKA
Teardrop Hotels offers a private 2-hour surfing experience for guests staying at Fort Bazaar (Galle Fort) and Kumu Beach (Balapitiya).
Surfing is a major part of Sri Lanka’s coastal culture and the island has been an off-beat surf destination since the 1970s. The main surf spots in Sri Lanka are located along its south and east coasts. In the south, popular surf destinations include Dewata, Hikkaduwa, Ahangama and Weligama. On the east coast, Arugam Bay takes centre stage as a renowned surfing hotspot.
Known for its stunning beaches, warm waters, and consistent waves, Sri Lanka offers something for surfers of all skill levels. Whether a seasoned pro looking for the next big challenge or a beginner eager to catch the first wave, Sri Lanka’s surf scene promises an unforgettable experience. Beyond the waves, Sri Lanka boasts lush tropical landscapes, rich cultural heritage and welcoming locals. After a day of surfing, guests of Teardrop Hotels can unwind with yoga sessions, feast on delicious Sri Lankan cuisine, experience the island’s rich biodiversity, or explore ancient temples and vibrant markets.
Sri Lanka’s unique geography provides year-round surfing opportunities. The island experiences two monsoon seasons, which divide the surfable coastline into two main regions. From November to April, the southwest coast comes alive with ideal conditions, while the east coast offers the best waves from May to October. The best time to visit depends on which coast one wishes to explore:
- Southwest Coast (Hikkaduwa, Dewata, Ahangama, Weligama): End of October to early April.
- East Coast (Arugam Bay, Whiskey Point): May to October.
- Shoulder Season: While the island’s south-western monsoon gets into full swing season during May to October, the Dewata and Weligama beaches in the south allow some surfing in the south in July and August and are safe for beginner surfing owing to their sand bottom breaks. The more advanced-level waves are further back, with offshore winds making clean waves and consistent swells during peak season.
Teardrop Hotels offers a private 2-hour surfing experience at Dewata Beach for up to four participants priced from USD35 per person for guests of properties, Fort Bazaar (Galle Fort), a 15-minute drive and Kumu Beach (Balapitiya), a 1-hour drive. Transfers can be arranged if required. The surf lesson begins with half an hour of theory and demonstration of the basic moves and techniques. This is then followed by a 1-hour practical lesson in the sea with the instructor to help get everyone up on the waves. Lessons are suitable for children, beginners or advanced surfers, and the session can be customised according to one’s skill level. Dewata’s sand bottom break is one of the safest breaks in Sri Lanka, even for children as young as 3 years. The remaining half an hour is spent surfing at leisure, with supervision at all times from the instructor.
Tips for Surfing in Sri Lanka
- Pack light: Board rentals are available at most surf spots, so no need to bring one’s own gear.
- Wear sunscreen and stay hydrated: The tropical sun can be intense, so should drink plenty of water and slather on lots of sunscreen between surf sessions.
