Coolcations to Try This Winter

READ

With an unprecedented number of heat records broken around the world over the last year, more people looking to escape the heat rather than chase it. Cooler climates are becoming the ultimate refresh button, with travellers now factoring in weather conditions when planning their trips.

We’ve already seen a significant increase of 44% in travel to cooler destinations in summer, and this trend is likely to continue over the winter months.

Gary Clark, Academy Director at SIA, provider of ski instructor courses and beyond, says: “The rise of coolcations comes at a time when climate change and extreme weather are increasingly shaping how we travel. Heatwaves have already made traditionally hot spots like the Mediterranean less desirable in the summer, while destinations that offer respite from the heat are becoming more popular year-round.”
So, whether you’re dreaming of crisp mountain air or the peaceful quiet of a snow-covered city, here are four coolcations to keep you relaxed and chilled out this winter.

Iceland
Iceland is one of those magical destinations where winter feels like the perfect time to visit. It’s a place where you can chase the Northern Lights, soak in geothermal hot springs, and explore some of the most stunning landscapes on the planet. With winter temperatures averaging between -1°C and 2°C, it’s cold, but in a way that feels invigorating, not unbearable.
Popular stops include Reykjavik’s cosy cafes and the Blue Lagoon, where you can warm up while surrounded by snow. Plus, the country’s geysers and volcanoes add a fiery contrast to the icy surroundings. Whether you’re watching the aurora borealis or hiking on glaciers, Iceland is a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. And don’t forget, winter is low season, meaning fewer crowds and more chances to experience this natural beauty in peace.

The Swiss Alps
When you think of winter getaways, the Swiss Alps often top the list. Not only do they offer some of the world’s best skiing and snowboarding, but the charming villages and breathtaking mountain views provide a picturesque setting for those who just want to relax and take in the beauty. Winter temperatures here can range between -2°C to 2°C, making it the perfect balance for outdoor adventure and cosy fireside moments.
Zermatt and St. Moritz are two must-visit spots for skiing, but if you’re more interested in culture and relaxation, head to towns like Interlaken or Lucerne. Both are surrounded by mountains but offer more than just skiing—think spa retreats, gourmet dining, and winter festivals. According to recent reports, Switzerland has seen booming tourism as more people prioritise off-the-beaten-path experiences in cool climates.

Quebec City, Canada
If you’re looking for a coolcation that blends European charm with North American accessibility, Quebec City is calling your name. This French-speaking city feels like a slice of Europe, especially when it’s dusted with snow. Old Quebec, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a maze of cobbled streets, stone buildings, and cosy bistros that make it perfect for a winter wander.
With temperatures hovering between -8°C and -12°C during the winter months, you’ll want to layer up, but the cold only adds to the magic. One of the highlights is the Quebec Winter Carnival, one of the largest and oldest winter festivals in the world, featuring ice sculptures, parades, and outdoor activities. Plus, you can experience a real-life ice hotel, the Hôtel de Glace, which is reconstructed every year and offers an unforgettable stay.

New Zealand’s South Island
While much of the Northern Hemisphere freezes over, New Zealand’s South Island offers a cool but not freezing alternative. January and February are summer months in New Zealand, but the temperatures in places like Queenstown and Fiordland National Park are still refreshingly cool, averaging between 15°C and 25°C. It’s the perfect destination if you want to escape extreme cold but still avoid the tropical heat.
New Zealand’s South Island is all about outdoor adventure. From hiking the iconic Milford Track to exploring the breathtaking fjords of Fiordland National Park, the natural beauty here is unmatched. For those looking for an adrenaline rush, Queenstown is known as the adventure capital of the world, offering everything from bungee jumping to skydiving. And if you’re more into chilling than thrills, there are plenty of vineyards, hot springs, and scenic drives to enjoy.
So, if you’re tired of sweating it out on a tropical beach, a coolcation might be exactly what you need this winter. Whether it’s chasing the Northern Lights in Iceland, sipping mulled wine in Quebec, or skiing the Swiss Alps, these cooler destinations offer a refreshing alternative to the heat. Coolcations are the future—and they’re here to stay.
